Stephen King Defends ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 Amid Angry Fan Comments

Some Game of Thrones fans are really pissed off about the show’s final season and are demanding that HBO re-do it in a petition that has generated more than 700,000 signatures. Despite harsh feedback, some industry members, including author Stephen King, are defending the Game of Thrones showrunners and Daenerys Targaryen’s “mad queen” behavior in Season 8.

On Thursday, King responded to outraged fans on Twitter, where he stood up for Game of Thrones‘ final season and why people might have a hard time embracing the show’s final moments. “I’ve loved the last season of GoT, including Dani going bugshit all over King’s Landing. There has been a lot of negativity about the windup, but I think it’s just because people don’t want ANY ending,” King wrote on Twitter. “But you know what they say: All good things…”

Game of Thrones’ last season didn’t start off rocky, however, fans have not been content with the outcome of “The Bells,” (Season 8, Episode 5), which showed the Mother of Dragons killing innocent people and burning King’s Landing to the ground, despite a call for surrender.

This prompted an angry fan to start the Change.org petition earlier this week, which calls for remaking Game of Thrones Season 8 with “competent writers.” “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense,” said the petition. “Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”

So far, the petition has generated 828,217 signatures, and HBO, nor the Game of Thrones showrunners have provided comment on it. Additionally, some Game of Thrones actors, such as Pilou Asbæk, have responded to fans’ outrage over Season 8, and they’re also siding with Benioff and Weiss for their character development and story telling.

Game of Thrones has one more episode left, which will air on Sunday, May 19, at 9 p.m. EST on HBO.
